FORMALDEHYDE IN MOBILE HOMES - THE PROBLEM. Formaldehyde is a
colorless, strong-smelling gas. It is
used to make building materials and household products. Formaldehyde is used to
make walls, cabinets, and furniture in trailers and mobile homes. A recent CDC report on FEMA supplied mobile
homes reported that Formaldehyde can make you feel sick
if you breathe a lot of it. People can
have symptoms such as:
- sore throat
- cough
- scratchy eyes
- nosebleeds
Scientists use the words “exposed” or
“exposure” to talk about how people come in contact with a substance, such as
formaldehyde. Some people are more sensitive than others, so an exposure that
causes no problems for some people can make other people sick or uncomfortable.
Some of these symptoms also happen with other upper respiratory illnesses, such
as colds/flu and seasonal allergies, so if you have these symptoms we recommend
that you see a doctor or another medical professional.
In general –
In general –
- If you are more sensitive to formaldehyde and are exposed to more of it for a longer time, you are more likely to have symptoms.
- If you are exposed to less formaldehyde for a shorter time, you are less likely to have symptoms, especially if you are not sensitive to formaldehyde.

MOLD IN MOBILE HOMES - THE PROBLEM.
According to a Harvard University School of Public Health study, over 50% of our homes have indoor mold. And once you have mold spores, it’s incredibly easy for those spores to latch on to a moist surface and multiply. That leaves a lot of families vulnerable to the possible health effects of indoor mold: Watery or itchy eyes Sore throat Congestion Coughing Skin irritation Asthma Respiratory problems In fact, a study at the University of Arizona suggests that mold spores are a suspected cause in the tripling of the asthma rate in the past 20 years. By knowing the facts or all about mold, you can better keep your home and family, safe and healthy. Typically mold needs three conditions to grow: Moisture from humidity, leaks or flooding Nutrients: organic materials that can act as a food source Optimal temperature, generally between 64-82 degrees.

EMF IN MOBILE HOMES - THE PROBLEM. SOURCE: "The body of scientific evidence linking EMFs (Electric and Magnetic fields) to many adverse health conditions and diseases is very compelling. According to the WHO "Electrical Hypersensitivity" (EHS), an allergic-like reaction to exposure to Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMFs), is a “growing worldwide health concern”. Experts estimate that today 3-5% of the populations in developed countries, is experiencing serious symptoms as a result of exposure to ever increasing levels of EMF, with as many as 35 to 50% experiencing less severe symptoms. The steady increase in EMF exposure in recent years is now being scientifically linked to many of today's unexplainable “new-age” health problems, including nervous system disorders, sleep problems, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, anxiety, headaches and others. EMF exposure is also being linked to many chronic diseases… including many cancers."

LIVING WELL IN SMALL SPACES
Most single wide mobile homes are around 980 square feet, more or less. This video shows some incredible ingenuity in converting 420 square feet in a New York apartment in SOHO into 8 rooms of living space. It proves a point that living well is not synonymous with large amounts of space. It can be done. Many of the suggestions here are adaptable to mobile homes.
